12th World AIDS Conference

The Scholarship Programme

Please follow the link for Special Information for Scholarship Applicants:

In June 1998, the global AIDS community will gather in Geneva, at the 12th World AIDS Conference, to share ideas, knowledge, experiences and to forge new partnerships that will further the world’s efforts against the pandemic.

An ambitious Scholarship Programme has been established to ensure that representatives from all regions affected by HIV/AIDS are able to attend. Practical hands-on training and networking sessions will be made available to scholarship delegates to assist in the acquisition of skills and to acquaint them with tools related to communication.

The Scholarship Programme will promote the participation at the Conference of the following individuals:

  • those most affected by HIV/AIDS
  • those whose abstracts have been selected for presentation at the Conference, either as part of the Scientific Aspects or the Community Aspects.
  • those who have strong links to community-based organisations and networks
  • those who would use and disseminate the knowledge gained at the Conference.

Miriam, a researcher and outreach worker from Nigeria, told us, "This is the best opportunity for us from the least developed nations to interact with our colleagues and peers who are working in the area of HIV/AIDS research."

Simon, a co-founder of a youth AIDS service organisation in his city in Canada, stated in his scholarship request, " I strongly feel that any information I have about AIDS is not mine to keep but mine to share."

Orphaned and later sold for prostitution Nita, who works for an NGO, has said, " My story will reveal the condition of girls in my country....If we overlook my side of the story, all the efforts for raising awareness will not be that effective." And José, a person living with AIDS and community activist from Peru told us, " I need to learn, to share, and to be heard."

Participation of delegates from developing countries, resource-poor areas and marginalised communities will be facilitated through this programme. The Scholarship Programme will also try to ensure that there is equitable regional and gender representation.

Scholarships will be determined by a selection process with clear criteria. The Conference expects to receive over 2000 applications. In these requests, applicants should specify how they intend to use the skills acquired at the Conference.

To date, CHF 2,000,000. has been earmarked to assist with travel, accommodation, living expenses, and Conference registration costs. Although full and partial scholarships will be offered, the Conference regrets that the total number of scholarships is limited.
